Not really interested in "Core" Ironhide, but Leader 86 Snarl is a must-have so far as I'm concerned. Reserved my copy, and will await his arrival...

Transformer Tuesday? Just another day for me with nothing that interesting happening. An rather lackluster in the wake of nothing interesting to me for months. It really is starting to seem like 23 is going to be a very light year with maybe only two releases I plan to buy.

Though I guess 22 wasn't much better since most of the stuff I bought was actually from 21.

The idea of a perfectly G1 looking Megatron bot that change into a tank is out there. I found that Megatron mousepad on Amazon.

Image

The art is official too.
So, having a SS86 leader Megatron that would look like this and transform like this is not a far-fetched idea.

I’d say it’s time to make this happen…
Especially while the SS86 subline is still going.
And I’d hope all of the focus gets put into the bot mode; it’s not like there are aspects of a tank that need to be accurately addressed to match what was seen in an episode, let alone the movie.
In fact I’d be okay if the alt mode was a “Cybertonian” tank or spaceship if that meant there are no treads in the lower legs (or anywhere).

I’ve been pretty okay with the 35th Anniversary figure, but it does fall a bit short.

Throw-out the energon mace, & package him with the “light saber” & blaster he used in the final battle.
Assuming the appearance, engineering, and articulation are on point,
I’d happily pay leader class cost for this version.

There's no realistic way for that tank to become that Megatron. Where did the turret go? Where did his legs come from? What happened to the treads? Maybe a Masterpiece with lots of tiny folding panels could pull this off, but there's no chance of it being done at retail.

That's basically just the Earthrise tank with the Siege turret. It wouldn't look that clean, but a retool of those would be pretty close.

Plus, there's enough room in those legs to store the tank threads. It has been done before easily.

My point is that it’s time to make a Megatron figure (for SS86) with a screen-accurate robot mode even if the alt mode is a tank.
No one is going to purely buy that figure for the tank mode anyway.
So if the bot parts cause misalignment where similar colors don’t match up for the alt mode, who cares.
It’s not ideal, but since a pistol alt mode will never be an option, something’s got to give.
With the bot mode being more important anyway, I’d say put all the eggs in that basket…
Very, very few are going to complain.

Isn't looking clean the whole point? He'd still have the front of the tank sticking out of his back hiding the treads in his legs wouldn't hide the the tank details. How do you take him from tank to gun detailed legs? It can be done by turning the legs inside out, but at that point you may as well start over from scratch. Sure wouldn't be a Voyager.

That's the whole point.
As a "voyager" sized Leader, he would have the parts needed to pull it off.

Or instead of a retool, retain the basic engineering of those molds but use the budget of a Leader. I'm not trying to be the product manager for the figure design, I'm just saying none of this is fundamentally impossible.

And to return to the point about whether the final product could look as "clean" as the illustration, that can be cheated in either direction. If a hypothetical Studio Series bot mode looks perfect, but the turret or treads are compromised, how many people would care that much? We're talking about an alt-mode that never appeared onscreen, after all.

If they do make a Leader Class SS-86 Megs, would any one want it to have a 3rd un-referenced / un-acknowldeged gun mode built in? Even if it's not really a Walther P-38, just some form of potential gun mode?

Or is him being a tank, but having an accurate robot mode enough?

What is the point of a gun mode that doesn't look like his on-screen equivalent?

Just to have a gun mode.

That's the question: would you want a gun mode even if it's not the precisely a Walther P-38? Just a gun mode, that kind of looks like a gun, or does it not matter at all as long as the robot mode is accurate enough the gun mode is not that important, or if there could be a gun mode, it must accurately represent the Walther P-38?

I'm trying to understand how important the actual Walther P-38 mode is.

Just to have a gun mode....

No, that's pointless. This isn't like a car, where you change the hood or the headlights to bypass a license, but it still looks similar. The hypothetical gun mode wouldn't be realistic at all. Arguably there could be a nerf gun, or a fake ray gun, or weird neon colors, but it's not going to look anything like his on-screen version, so it adds no value.

It’s not that I’m against a gun mode, even if it’s some wacky design per se, but if it’s an unofficial 3rd mode, then it’s not going to be that good anyway.

But I really hope Hastak either sees these conversations, and/or already has something in the works.
It’s 1 version of Megatron, and surely not the last…. So give us a screen accurate bot mode, despite a non-G1 alt mode….
And let’s be honest, for every person who ends up bitching that a Megatron with a tank alt mode should never be in SS86, there will be 9 people hunting for this figure high and low.
It’s still going to bring in decent $$$ for Hastak, so what’s there to lose?

Speaking of bonus "gun" mode, it could be a "spaceship" or a "submarine" (wink wink, nudge nudge) like they did for Siege Shockwave.

Personally speaking, while it would be odd to have a Megatron in Studio Series 1986 that has a completely different alt mode to what was in the movie, it wouldn't matter that much to me if the figure itself is good. I'm an early 2000's kid who grew up with Megatron as tanks and aircraft and I'm fine with G1 Megatron being a tank, so a gun mode doesn't matter too much to me.
It was recently said in a Q&A with the brand team that the tape deck version of the Soundwave mould is out of exclusivity now, so what I'm really hoping for in the next couple of years is a 1986 Soundwave, either a new mould or a re-issue of the Netflix toy with the yellowing plastic issue fixed. You could even do new versions of Laserbeak and Ravage to go along with it, we have just had Rumble after all.

One of the recent Hasbro videos also hinted that even making Shockwave a gun nowadays is difficult since, even with his being an unrealistic sci-fi blaster, his dark purple coloring is problematic since dark colors at all are too close to realistic firearms for his space gun mode to pass legal.

Then do cartoon colors. Hasbro makes dark blue and purple Nerf guns. Of course the bright orange barrel is likely to be problematic for people unless they do Action Master colors.

That looks more like a real gun than Shockwave ever could.

TBH, anyone who mistakes Shockwave for being an actual gun needs their head examined. And frankly those same people would assume any item being held in your hand could be a firearm.

And realistically, no one in their right mind is going to be taking either Shockwave or Megatron into a public area in the first f*ing place... These are toy collectible they're putting on a shelf for display in a home.

The only issue I see would be a kid doing such a thing, which kids bring all kinds of weaponry to public places all the time as it is. Thus it's up to the "Parent" to either not buy such a toy for them if it goes against their beliefs, or to instruct said child it should not ever be taken to School. Sometimes I feel all sense of responsibility and discipline has been removed from parenting if these are actual items of concern.

No one's calling for the banning of chemicals in our foods that are slowly killing everyone by causing various health issues, or preventing the contaminations of our lakes and streams which are the lifeblood of our Planet. Yet we've got advocates calling for some of the craziest crap imaginable on other issues... You can't stop climate change with Tax Money, but you can stop companies from polluting if the fines were more serious and anyone gave damn about real problems. :HEADHURTS:

I'm sorry you're not going to get a gun Megatron, maybe if you cry harder Hasbro will change their mind about putting kids at risk.

Since everyone is chiming in, I guess I will as well. First off, those that know me, know that I am absolutely apolitical. I dont think there is a nation on Earth (nor party in any nation) that can govern people competently. However I do my best to be respectful and law-abiding, and teach my children to do the same.

That being said... I cannot begin to comprehend the tragedy and loss that families of children whose lives were taken as the result of a toy gun being mistaken for an actual weapon. We are 30+ years removed from those events, but I know the hurt will never go away. Still, none of these were directly as a result of the Takara/Hasbro produced toy Megatron. Could it have happened eventually? Who knows. But today, we live in a world where a child can be suspended at school for pointing his index finger and thumb in the shape of a gun on the playground and going "pew...pew..." but there is no gun control law that could ever be passed that will prevent a nutcase from going to a crowded place and taking the lives of many.

Bringing this back to toys. While the SS line original intent has changed somewhat, I like to think it still stands for something. A faithful representation of what appears onscreen in any given production. Sure if a character did not appear with an alt-mode, I understand there is some creative license, and consideration of concepts that didn't make it on screen. But there is no case for this to be made for Megatron. The only solution is to just NOT produce said toy. I have no problems with Megatron as a Tank. I own the 1st Netflix release as my counterpart to ER Optimus. It was recolored and retooled what 10 times at least? As far as I'm concerned, they can keep making new Tank Megatron's for the future as well, in the main Generations line, and every other new kid line that comes out. But for SS86, nope. The RED figures of Megatron, and Shockwave (apparently) will have to suffice. If at any point Hasbro does decide to develop a SS86 Megatron that is anything other than an accurate representation of that film, they they will have lost all credibility with me. Again, just my opinion.

In my opinion, there's plenty of evidence that gun Megatron is over. All the political rants in the world aren't going to change that, so everyone should get over it and move on. I'm not sure what any of that has to do with SS86 at this point.

There's nothing you need to say, I don't need help. I'm clearly aware of the risks regarding toy guns and they have nothing to do with the toys themselves. They have to do with lack of proper parenting and incompetent law enforcement individuals.
In my opinion, there's plenty of evidence that gun Megatron is over. All the political rants in the world aren't going to change that, so everyone should get over it and move on. I'm not sure what any of that has to do with SS86 at this point.
Just because you don't care to discuss a certain subject doesn't mean others aren't allowed to. (So far.)

And gun Megatron has everything to do with SS86 because in the animated movie he was a gun.

Having said that, I also realize that gun Megatron won't happen, and will be happy with a Megatron that has an accurate robot mode.

Maybe if you cross your fingers really tightly Takara Tomy will make a Voyager sized Megatron one day that turns into a gun. They still make gun Megatrons over there because guns are so rare that it's simply unfathomable that a child would have access to one.

To my understanding they're pretty loose over there and companies have their choice of safety organizations they can join with safety measures ranging from specific stamps to a warning label on the package. Even highly realistic and regulated Airsoft guns don't require orange caps like they do in most countries. One thing I found looking into it is that Japan considers a model or toy gun safe if there's no way to modify it into a real gun, be it made of plastic or zinc alloy (die cast) or being made with a steel plate in the barrel or a metal rod running the length of the gun. So transforming robots probably aren't going to be much of an issue there.

Their parenting is most likely superior to the US as well, prompting most children to be more responsible. Not sure how competent their cops are.

Yes, I'm sure the parenting is the primary explanation, doesn't have anything to do with the comparative gun ownership rates. Japan: 0.3 per 100 people, US: 120 per 100 people. I would prefer to keep gun politics out of the thread entirely, but if that's too much to ask, maybe we should start talking facts and not nonsense.

The cops must be very stressed out what with all the kaiju, giant robots, and superpowered spandex-clad heroes and villains Japan has to deal with on a regular basis.

Speaking of facts vs nonsense...you are saying there are 20% more Guns in the United States than there are people as a whole ?(396 Million Guns in a nation of 330 million people?) not sure where you came up with that... I just had to double check my home to make sure there wasn't some stash of weaponry I wasn't ware of.... To my knowledge there are still (thankfully) no guns in my home.

You may be surprised to learn that some people have more than one gun.

Yes, but some of the ones who own multiples own many, many multiples. Let me Google that for you. Jump down to the section "Only a few gun owners hold a large share of guns"

The number of guns is irrelevant. It only takes 1 gun to do damage if someone thinks it's acceptable. If people were responsible with them to begin with (which in most cases start when they're children and learn to follow behavior examples of the adults in their lives) there wouldn't be a need for laws prohibiting toy guns because the chances that a child would be wielding a real gun would be practically zero. Either the kid's parent would know to safely keep it away, or the kid would know not to touch it even if it's accessible. When I was a child we had firearms around and I was told only once not to touch any of them without adult supervision. I'm still here and I never shot anyone.

And the fact that you dismiss parental accountability as "nonsense" shows just how faulty your thinking is. You also fault cutlery for the obesity problem in the US instead of people's lack of sense in using them. And to be clear, I'm talking about handguns that are easier to replicate as toys, and what Megatron was in TF:TM. I'm not in favor of people (or ANYONE) owning what is termed by anti-gun people as "assault rifles."

Here's the thing, as long as gun violence is the primary cause of death of children in this country, you're not going to get a gun Megatron. The former is the only thing that bothers me, not the latter.

Agreed. I've stated previously I'm fine with not getting a gun Megatron. And I'm absolutely NOT fine with gun violence towards children or even adults. We do have a difference of opinion on the root cause.
