something like that ;)

Pepernoot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pepernoot
Course Dessert
Place of origin Netherlands
Main ingredients

Flour
Sugar
Aniseed
Cinnamon
Cloves

A pepernoot ['peːpərnoːt] (plural: pepernoten ['peːpərnoːtə]) (literally, "pepper nuts", the Dutch equivalent of Pfeffernüsse) is a cookie-like kind of confectionery, traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands.

They are light brown, round shaped, and made from the same ingredients as taai-taai: flour, sugar, anise, cinnamon, and clove. They are fairly chewy, though they harden gradually when exposed to the air.

A particularly distinct custom associated with pepernoten is throwing them in handfuls through the room so children can look for them. Originally this is an ancient fertility symbol (like a farmer sowing seeds) not unlike throwing rice at a marriage.

Image

and the other ones, also usually called pepernoten, are kruidnoten

Kruidnoten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkrœytnoːtə(n)]) are a cookie-like confectionery, traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands.

The term kruidnoten is often confused with pepernoten.[1][2] Kruidnoten, which translates to "spice nuts" in English, are harder, have a different colour and shape, and are made with the same ingredients as speculoos.[3]

Another variety of kruidnoten, called chocolade-kruidnoten, are covered in either milk, dark, or white chocolate.[4]

And that's the Epiphany/Three Kings tradition still standing in some countries. :D

It's an amalgamation of numerous winter-based holidays, all of which took place around the same time as Christmas. (Which, in itself, still featured gift-giving; for instance, gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh) So in a weird way, it could still be seen as a time of togetherness, not just of people, but of their various holiday celebrations.

That's a good point, Shadowman. A very good point.

Also, I think one of the other holidays you're talking about was some pagen thing, and way back when the Catholic Church was deciding when it wanted Christmas placed on the Julio-Gregorian calender, they replaced this pagen day with Christmas. For obvious reasons.

First off, Pagan, two A's.

Second "Julio-Gregorian calendar" isn't a real thing; you're in fact mixing two different (Although similar) calendars, the defunct Julian Calendar, and the Gregorian Calendar everyone uses.

Third and final: The Pagan tradition was called Yule, and in case the name didn't tip you off, (Or my repeated use of the word "Amalgamation") they didn't replace it. Yule became a major facet of Christmas. Yule even lasts 12 Days, so now you know where that comes from.

Yes, but (a) you knew what I was talking about, and (b) the biggest difference between the two is the placement of the months within the year, and the beginning and end of the year itself.
Shadowman wrote:Third and final: The Pagan tradition was called Yule, and in case the name didn't tip you off, (Or my repeated use of the word "Amalgamation") they didn't replace it. Yule became a major facet of Christmas. Yule even lasts 12 Days, so now you know where that comes from.

they may not have succeeded in replacing the other holidays, but that was their intent. It even extended to the English Puritan Parliament, between 1649 and 1660, attempting to ban Christmas celebrations outright because they considered it to be nothing more than pompous...pomp...

And in 1659, in Colonial America, the Puritans actually DID outlay the celebration of Christmas, going as far as to change "merry Christmas" into "happy holidays" (now you know where that comes from) and calling Christmas Trees "holiday trees."

The Puritans had nothing to do with the Christianization of Europe. They were, however, major religious extremists who got pissed that the Church of England wasn't outlawing Catholicism, and broke off to form their own country. They were the Tea Party, so yes, of course they started outlawing things for silly reasons. (They outlawed Christmas because they associated it with idoltry. Apparently Jesus doesn't get a pass for the Second Commandment)

I know the feels, bro. It snowed like crazy last month, but it's mid-December, and the most we've had is a light dusting. And that's really weird for the state of Michigan. A far cry from what the Arctic did to us last year.
