So trailbreaker looks awful per the hoist mold, streaker looks nice but his massively empty legs aren't super exciting me; are we really this far out form the budget allowances of the new price points that hollow limbs are already back in force :BANG_HEAD:

Don't think they look too bad, and that Sideswipe will look good with him (no they can't redco Sunstreaker to be Sideswipe before anyone points that out.)

Yeah, that Susntreaker does look pretty close to SIEGE Sideswipe. And also lawyerdodges differently. Sunstreaker has more overtly Countach wheels and windows than Sideswipe, but has decidedly different rear vents.

Hellscream9999 wrote:So I just got grapple and it didn't even survive one transformation, the peg that connects his foot to his crane in vehicle mode snapped off in his foot, now it can't even use the combat system; thanks hasbro you suck
While HasTak are at fault for not adequately testing... given that this was an issue you'd heard about people having, you could have heeded that warning and taken the transformation slowly enough to test the fit (and thus stop when it became clear it was too tight, before the peg was all the way in).

If you're willing to take photos, I can advise on repairing it.

1. For those of us who like the look of the Hoist mold, Trailbreaker is handsome :P
2. Wheeljack's legs have exposed gaps too, in case you didn't notice. I think might be less a case of budget (Though that's probably a part of it) and more a case of the current design team's apparent allergy to telescoping legs.

I can forgive hollow parts when they're part of the transformation. Looks like his legs collapse the same way the Combiner Wars cars did. There's a lot going on with his feet, it almost looks like the top of his feet are the bottom of the car front. Instead of spinning his feet around they just mirrored it on both sides, I can't find the same cut outs on the hood as on his feet. That weapons has to go though.

Sadly this is a common problem people are finding. It even has it's own paragraph in the TFWiki entry.

Many buyers have reported that the circular pegs on the base of Grapple's crane are much too thick for the hexagonal pegholes on the bottom of his soles meant to secure the vehicle mode, causing them to break when attempting to unpeg them during transformation to robot mode. If the pegholes seem too tight, it's advised to lightly sand them down before fully plugging them in to avoid this risk.

Come on, Hasbro, this is what test molds are for. Between this and Apeface you're really letting the quality control slip in ways it shouldn't be possible.

Emerje

So with some light sanding with the emery board on my pocket knife, I've got one peg all ready to go on my replacement grapple, for some reason the peg that goes into his right foot is way too big, but I've almost got that one sanded down too.

I feel kinda bad for stores, if they take a hit on these grapple figures, being broke and returned, I was 2 for 2 with this problem and mr and mrs random parent certainly aren't going to know about this problem; I know first production run syndrome is a thing, but this is ridiculous, I had an exploded shoulder on my prime too :HEADHURTS:

Just leave it on his back to poke up behind his head. Something just seems right about that in his case ;)
You're right about the tops of his feet being the bottom of his car front. The shape of the tops of his feet doesn't match doesn't match the transformation seams on the hood, and the position of the doors on his legs clinches it.

What was the big slipup with Apeface?

Major first-run errors are nothing new, sadly. Like this mess:
TFWiki wrote: Many Soundwave figures in the initial Galaxy Force run had a serious misassembly issue preventing the toy from correctly transforming into fighter mode. The large hinge bar that connects the upper torso to the waist is bolted crookedly on one side, making it impossible for the legs and the canopy to properly form the front of the fighter.

Turn the crane into a cannon and rework the rest of the cab and body into a military half track :michaelbay:

I think you just made yourself mortal enemies with Rodimus Prime (as in, the Seibertron user), considering the nature of "Darkmount" and how several of the character's fans are already disappointed with currently-only toy being a halftrack rather than a flying cannon (although it can be configured as a flying gun).

With Apeface, the shield/rear wing is fragile clear plastic, and the fit for the Jet mode is snug. Plus, with the way it wraps around the cockpit, its next to impossible to rock it loose, and more than a few reports have come in on that peg breaking off in Apeface's back

Sunstreaker: ugh. Its a buy, but that weapon/engine looks more slapped on than the Universe version was and the lack of a spoiler is just atrocious. This looks like a mold intended for Sideswipe and redeco'd as Sunstreaker. I wish that they had molded the cartoonish engine into rhe back of the car itself. It looks like he has the swivel holes that Wheeljack did for his "wings" so they could have at least put in a spoiler for him.

TrailBreaker is a definate must. The intentionally ugly bot mode is great. I find the lack of the head piece strange though, they replaced it with a single gun barrel?

Ah, I see. Good to know. I take it it's hard plastic then?

Regarding alternate uses of the Grapple/Inferno mold... I would personally like to see the unreleased Landslide/Sawtooth deco originally intended for the Cybertron Mudflap mold:

 No, it doesn't, because the pieces are in completely the wrong place for that because Sideswipe has a completely different transformation. The supercharger looks slapped on because it's attached to a 5mm port designed to also work for the C.O.M.B.A.T. system rather than tabbed directly into the car back.
Flashwave wrote:I wish that they had molded the cartoonish engine into rhe back of the car itself.
They could have done that. But A. it might not end up in an ideal place in robot mode and B. they had to give him a handheld weapon of some sort, and there are plastic limits. That being said, they could have done with sculpting it to blend in better. Like, give it some curved ridges on the bottom to make it flush with the back of the car.
Flashwave wrote:It looks like he has the swivel holes that Wheeljack did for his "wings" so they could have at least put in a spoiler for him.
Possibly they could have. But on the other hand, his brother doesn't have one either. And plastic limits can be cruel... A spoiler would be nice, no doubts there, but...

Sunstreaker looks better than expected. It's nice that they designed the alt mode to (relatively) match Sideswipe. Upon inspection, it doesn't look like he shares any parts with Wheeljack, except for maybe some minor parts like the shoulder joints. There are similarities in engineering, particularly in their legs and torso, but I think 'Streak may be an entirely new mold. He does share one thing with Wheeljack though, a lack of decent weapons. :HEADHURTS:

I think Trailbreaker wears the mold better than Hoist.

As expected, I have zero interest in either of these. Nice to see that Sunstreaker does look decidedly different from Jackie though, and we'll probably get a look at how his legs actually work/look over this weekend if these two are being shown in Melbourne.

Flashwave wrote:TrailBreaker is a definate must. The intentionally ugly bot mode is great. I find the lack of the head piece strange though, they replaced it with a single gun barrel?

...I think the headpiece is actually there on the render, it's just obscured by the head due to the angle of the shot and it appears to be black instead of silver. You can see the corner of it poking out from behind his head if you look closely enough.

The supercharger still looks less ridiculous than the CW Breakdown mold's attempt to have the HFG double as the supercharger.

Tuned Agent wrote:He does share one thing with Wheeljack though, a lack of decent weapons. :HEADHURTS:
I blame plastic limits combined with neither having a signature gun.

I'm quite eager for Sunstreaker and Trailbreaker. They both look good to me. Wheeljack wasn't as interesting to me because I find his 2011 toy (which I already own, and which can use the original toy's launchers) to be just fine. Sunstreaker on the other hand... The CW version has completely the wrong robot mode because it's a headswap recolor of Breakdown, and the Universe toy really is a mold intended as Sideswipe and redecoed as Sunstreaker.

So many Transformers to get this year! But after Sunstreaker, that just leaves Inferno, the Autobot Targetmasters, and some Throttlebots and that's, like, every G1 character I want. Then I can satisfy the itch with some secondhand vintage stuff until something new comes along.

And yeah, Sunstreaker looks to be his own mold, at least with no shared parts.

Ah, I see. Good to know. I take it it's hard plastic then?

It's clear plastic painted pink. No idea why they would choose to do it that way. First the peg is super long and the clear plastic is brittle so it just snaps without warning, you can't even feel it snap when it happens. They should have run a pin through it like they occasionally do on high stress parts.
Image

The other problem is the peg isn't even necessary for alt modes since it's also secured by going over the cockpit (the real one for the Titan Master in the back), the peg is only necessary for using as a shield and could have been half as long.
Image

Mine broke, but there's enough peg left to still function as a shield and honestly looks better closer to the arm.

Since Runamuck and Sunstreaker are in the same wave it would have been a little strange to have one be a retool of the other. And really, Runamuck doesn't need to be a retool since the mold is ready made for a black repaint.

You had already said it was painted clear plastic. :-P I was asking for confirmation that it was hard clear plastic rather than soft clear plastic. As for why they did it that way, maybe they wanted a rear viewport. Maybe it was easier to put that part on the clear plastic sprue rather than the pink plastic sprue.

I have to wonder if maybe they thought that lengthening the peg would make it less likely to break. If so, whoops!

Also, according to TFWiki you actually can sit the Titan Master in the forward cockpit

With that Trailbreaker definitely not being the Thrilling 30-esque one seen in the Earthrise packaging, I guess we can consider the T30 one showing up on said packaging to be a return of the wonderfully bizarre phenomenon that is the "Archive Oops".

Another, more subtle case of it is Thrust and Ramjet being illustrated based on the 1985 toys.

Redundancy for the sake of clarity. :) It's rigid plastic, soft plastic would have probably started to show signs of stress before breaking. I don't have him handy but I'm pretty sure the peg is also hollow down the middle.

I've heard a lot about the battlechargers sharing a mold with Cliffjumper so they would be minibot sized, why is that? I always thought they were supposed to be the size of the Autobot cars. Were they ever that small?

I think 'Swipe and Alert wore it better because the transformation layout is more along their lines. But do you know who think would frankly wear it better than any of them (especially with some retooling to the arms to mount the doors in a different way)?

No shared parts. Just similar engineering, mainly the folding of the legs and similar in the arms. Front of sunstreakers biceps are the top of the rear of the car where as with wheeljack the front of his biceps are the bottom of the car. Transform similar but not the same

You can see those shared parts on those figures. Thighs hands and knees for both those examples. On this? You can see there’s no shared parts. They’re two different figures with similar engineering. I thought there was in the crotch and thighs but I have wheeljack in front of me and I’m looking at the sunstreaker photos, there’s nothing there.

Probably because the original toys are pretty small, but then again the regular Autobot cars were pretty small, too.

What about the hips? Looking at photos, those might be the same. And there's no telling with the inner shoulder.

I checked both. They are different, he’s a new mold. Similar engineering in a couple spots but he’s a brand new mold.

On a tangent, did anyone notice he's missing his spoiler?

1. Please learn that you don't need to insert umpteen line breaks after the closing quote tag, and that it's actually best to delete the one it creates by default.
2. Can you give me some closeups of Wheeljack for comparison? Especially with regards to the matter of the inner shoulder, because none of the Wheeljack pics I'm seeing on Google Images are giving me a good look at his. For clarity's sake, by "inner shoulder" I'm referring to the joint part of the shoulder.

Because the back top the the rear of the car becomes the front of his shoulders and biceps. There’s no place for it.

It may be a balance thing. Remember the Sharkticon mold is rather front heavy, and the ball joint knees/elbows don't help the matter any at all.

Im not taking photos. you can just take my word , someone who has wheeljack and has compared him in hand to these images and can verify that sunstreaker is a new mold. Im not trolling or laying deceit. I’m confirming he’s not a retool. Congratulations. You’re getting a new mold for a character. I’m happy, you should be happy.

Actually, the middle of the top rear of his car mode would stay on his back. The rear vents and bumper become the arms, but not the middle part. A spoiler could potentially be mounted to that part.

Those holes I circled are the same holes. That would meann his spoiler would be on the side of his arms which would block his ability to use folks like ironworks and the siege weaponiser. No place for a spoiler unless it became a weapon. Something they obviously didn’t wanna do

If he had been a Wheeljack retool, they might have been able to do a hinged spoiler like Jackie's bot mode wings. Thats part od why I thought Jackie was going to be the base mold

@randomhero  :-x :BANG_HEAD: I'm talking about the part of his car mode rear THAT THE SUPERCHARGER IS PLUGGED INTO AND SITS OVER. The middle part. Not the sides where the vents are, not the end where those holes are, the MIDDLE.

I saw those holes too. If Hasbro doesnt fill thrm, any of the Varage companies that have popped up like Nonnef or Matrix Workshop no doubt will.

Whatever. You obviously know everything about it and wheeljack who you don’t own, but you’re right there could have been a spoiler and an extra gun and whatever else to complain about. Hasbro obviously coulda done better. I’m tired of arguing with a grown adult over a toy they’re not gonna give two shits about 2 months after it’s out because they’ve moved on to another figure. I gotta better stuff to do than deal with this trash.
