Amazon has recently listed a new pre-order for Transformers Armada-Complete Series on DVD. Great new for Armada fans who missed the previous DVD releases from Rhino back in the mid 2000's. According to the listing this is being offered by Gaiam Americas, however there is a good chance Shout! Factory is actually the studio behind the set. Shout! Factory has been handling most Transformers cartoon home releases for the past few years, and Gaiam Americas is a known distributor for Shout! Factory. The set is priced at $31.49 and scheduled to release on March 11th, 2014.

If it's remastered/touched up/has bonus content, ok. If not, my Rhino set is good.

And "Bonus Content" ought to be a Minicon or three. Not doing that is a total missed opportunity.

I doubt it'll be touched up any differently from the Rhino version since the video source originates from Japan instead of the U.S.

And since Hasbro was content with having Rhino release the flawed footage of the U.S. version on DVD, I doubt their stance on this has changed. As Hasbro likely only owns the English version, I can't see them reaching out to Japan for the better masters of the Japanese version for this when they already have a version they figured was adequate enough to air on TV/release on DVD the first time around and likely deem acceptable now still. ;)

Oh, how I would love for the Micron Densetsu footage to be included in this as well.

What I'd especially love to happen would be for just a full-blown subtitled release of Micron Densetsu in and of itself, just so I could watch this show without the English version's subpar acting and scripting. Come on, fansubbing groups. You know you want to. ;;)

Based on past experiences of Hasbro and Shout! Factory, it'll most likely be the exact same flawed animation from the original broadcast of the English version.

What kind of special features would you want? Directors commentary? It's been 11 years I doubt they would remember anything useful. It's probably too expensive to try and get the Japanese audio so that leaves interviews with the voice actors, last time they did that it was roundtables that were less about the shows and more about the individual actors.

Ooh. I like the cover, actually. I'd only double-up if we could get a Blu-Ray version. Can't believe they haven't put out Animated on Blu-Ray, knowing they have it in high-def. Maybe now that Prime is over they'll slip that into the lineup.

I can think of a lot! Cost aside, there's plenty of ideas:

- Galleries of Dreamwave's Armada MTMTE Profiles
- Japanese Audio w/ subs
- Japanese openings/endings
- Toy advertisements
- VA and Production crew commentary
- Hasbro team commentary (they'd certainly have some fun stuff)
- Pre-production art/stills/prototype images
- A pack-in Minicon (wishful thinking, I know)
- Even a "marathon version" of the show without the intro and ending to each episode would be fun
- There was also a tie-in game and comic, some of those creators may have contributions.

There are obviously challenges to several of these things, as you've pointed out, but just the straight re-release of the series feels lazy to me. I want to support Shout, but I just can't in this instance.

That panel was a trainwreck, but mostly because of dumb audience questions. Very disappointed in it.

Out of that list the Minicon seems the most doable. FYI commercials are hard to do because if they have human actors the faces usually have to blurred out due to rights issues. Check out on You Tube some of the old G1 commercials, they range from hysterical to disturbing.

You would still have to pay royalties to the actors and I think there are certain laws pertaining to child actors or actors who were children at the time.

Yeah, I was hoping they could pay them for the appearance AND any use of the commercial on DVDs as a lump contract... but seems like you're right, now that I think about it. Bummer.

I could see them doing DVD toy galleries more than anything else, especially since there's already one available for them to use. The Rhino sets had a gallery of official Armada toy photos that Shout! could import over to this set, since Shout! did the same thing for some of the extras in the Rhino Beast Wars DVDs. ;)

ScottyP wrote:- Japanese Audio w/ subs
- Japanese openings/endings
These two I'd envision being the least possible since the rights to the Japanese audio and OPs/EDs would be in the hands of Takara and/or other parties involved with the Japanese version, rather than own by Hasbro and Shout! Factory.

ScottyP wrote:- VA and Production crew commentary
I'd love to hear would be talked about in this since it'd probably be chock full of nightmarish stories about hasty deadlines and quality control shortcuts related to the scripts and/or the acting. I mean, Garry Chalk has spoken time and again about how dreadful it was just voicing Optimus on the show, so imagine what kind of unholy frustrations the dubbing team would talk about. IF they were allowed to, that is. :P

Ah, now THAT's the Dreamwave art you incorporate into DVD releases a decade later.

Awesome as it is, I'm pretty sure I already have that image as a wraparound cover or insert or something, so I'll just let 150 fans whom Armada made a stronger impression on have those lithographs while I wait for the best deal on the set. I'd just graduated from college when Armada started, and the nostalgia I get from this and Toonami's recent addition of Samurai Jack is making me feel really old right now.

Pass. The content isn't any improvement over my Rhino DVD sets, so I'd only be buying it for the packaging, which is just old, recycled art from the Dreamwave era.

Though, reading the back description in Jim Conrad's voice feels really appropriate. :P

And, I find it funny how the fact that the Autobots have to protect humanity in addition to protecting the Mini-Cons looks tacked on like it was an afterthought. "The Mini-Cons are the most important thing in the world! They must be protected at all cost! ... Oh, and uh, some humans, gotta save them too."

No one ever did for the English version. Only the Japanese version got fixed, but Hasbro doesn't own that version and doesn't care enough to want to.

Let's put it this way, even if you pretty up a piece of turd, in the end it still looks and smells the same. Armada got some of the worst treatment here in the West. Never mind the fact that it was unfinished animation, but the fact there were so many errors with the script that it was embarrassing.

Sadly, it always seems that whatever Transformers series we get from Japan, there's also some weird production issues with it. If these guys offered a new transfer with both English and Japanese language with subtitles it would be a definite purchase for me.

The same goes with Japan when they get our productions of Transformers, you end up with weird stuff like in Beast Wars where Air Razor is a guy or the fact that DVD collection is missing 2 episodes (Bad Spark - which came with the BW2 Movie and Cutting edge)

Then there's Transformers Prime in Japan, where you don't even get the 3rd season.

And how! The production both the Armada and Energon dubs were so rushed and so terrible that it's become a chore to sit through either.

kary wrote:Sadly, it always seems that whatever Transformers series we get from Japan, there's also some weird production issues with it.
Save for Cybertron, which did not have a rushed production and most of its changes seemed deliberate.

Same with RiD, as a lot of its dubbing issues were out of the dubbers hands thanks to 9/11.

kary wrote:If these guys offered a new transfer with both English and Japanese language with subtitles it would be a definite purchase for me.
Not sure dual-audio could work unless the time duration of the English version was equal to that of the Japanese version, but I'd definitely take a subtitled release with the Japanese audio.

Though, just as long as Hasbro itself stays far away from the subtitle script since their interference with the subtitles of the Shout! Factory Japanese G1 series DVD sets ruined those subtitles.

kary wrote:The same goes with Japan when they get our productions of Transformers, you end up with weird stuff like in Beast Wars where Air Razor is a guy or the fact that DVD collection is missing 2 episodes (Bad Spark - which came with the BW2 Movie and Cutting edge)
That's because those two episode weren't treated as part of the Japanese dub's episodes, being treated as feature films instead. Their removal is also was "Where is the Banana?" and "Remix: I Lost the Banana" were created.

kary wrote:Then there's Transformers Prime in Japan, where you don't even get the 3rd season.
Apparently, TF: Prime's Japanese dub bombed in the Japan that releasing season three over there may not be worth it for them. There's also the matter of Transformers Go! succeeding Prime season 2 in its stead, what with the altered ending done to episode 52 of TF: Prime. ;)

"And, I find it funny how the fact that the Autobots have to protect humanity in addition to protecting the Mini-Cons looks tacked on like it was an afterthought. "The Mini-Cons are the most important thing in the world! They must be protected at all cost! ... Oh, and uh, some humans, gotta save them too.""
yeah, that is funny but its a kids show it isn't supposed to be logical! Any TF cartoon for that matter >:oP

Soooo... here's something we never knew existed.

According to a discussion on this TFWiki talk page, a discovery has been made that episode 40 of Armada, "Remorse", was given a second English dub that contains some lines altered from its original English version, as well as the Unicron Battles version of the opening that original premiered with episode 41 instead.

The new lines that have been changed feature a new filter on the Autobots' voices that make them sound even more metallic and monotone than before, and now their dialogue mentions Smokescreen's name having been changed to Hoist two episodes earlier than when his name change was first brought up in Episode 42.

Further details on this are as follows:
Fred had his first line extended from "Is there any way we can fix Optimus?" to add, "the way we fixed up Smokescreen? I mean Hoist?", which required starting the line sooner and made his speech overlap with the animation of him just crying. Red Alert's response was then rewritten some to fit in another mention of Smokescreen's deal, going from...

"I'm sorry. It can't be done. Optimus's body released its Spark when it blocked the Hydra Cannon's blast, and without it, there's no way we can bring him back. I wish there was some way we could, but we're just going to have to pull ourselves together and carry on without him."

to...

"No. I'm sorry, we can't. Optimus's body released its Spark when it blocked the Hydra Cannon. We saved Smokescreen's Spark and were able to reformat him into Hoist. I wish there was some way that we could but... we're just going to have to carry on without him."

And sure enough, in the next scene, "Try and be more careful, Smokescreen!" was replaced with, "Please, try and be more careful, Hoist."

This discovery was first found on the Tubi TV streaming version of the episode, and has now been confirmed on Twitter to also exist on the Shout! Factory DVD release of the series, while the original Rhino DVD release had only the first dub version.

This makes me wonder if there might have been any other dub changes made at the time in any other episodes, which could also be found on the Shout! Factory DVD set.
