Los Angeles, C.A. and Pawtucket, R.I. - September 20, 2013 - Premier global branded play company, Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) and world renowned rock band, LINKIN PARK, released a special edition action figure of the TRANSFORMERS character SOUNDWAVE today at the SURU store in Los Angeles, C.A. The LINKIN PARK SOUNDWAVE TRANSFORMERS action figure also marks the first celebrity designed TRANSFORMERS figure in the brand's 30-year history.
LINKIN PARK is no stranger to the 'MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE' brand having provided songs for three TRANSFORMERS movie soundtracks and with members of the band growing up as fans of the 'ROBOTS IN DISGUISE." Joe Hahn of LINKIN PARK, worked closely with TRANSFORMERS designers at Hasbro, and has been a life-long TRANSFORMERS fan and collector.
"I grew up playing with TRANSFORMERS toys in the 1980's and still collect TRANSFORMERS figures to this day," said Hahn. "As a fan, providing music for the movie soundtracks and creating a LINKIN PARK inspired TRANSFORMERS action figure is beyond any fan's dream come true."
The LINKIN PARK special edition figure is in the "Generation 1" or "G1" style of the fan favorite SOUNDWAVE TRANSFORMERS character, features a gold deco treatment and is packaged in a unique cassette tape-inspired box. "LINKIN PARK chose the SOUNDWAVE character in the 'G1' style for his retro-appeal," Hahn continued. "In the original animated series from the 80's, SOUNDWAVE converts into a tape deck, has cassette tapes as minions and battles the AUTOBOTS with blasts of sound; he was an easy choice to represent our band."
"LINKIN PARK are best in class, iconic musicians and we consider them part of the TRANSFORMERS team," said Jay Duke, Vice President of Global Brand Marketing, Hasbro. "The TRANSFORMERS brand is thrilled to have LINKIN PARK be one of the first celebrities to inspire a TRANSFORMERS action figure. The LINKIN PARK collaboration is an exciting part of the TRANSFORMERS 30th anniversary celebration."
SURU will be the exclusive retailer for this special edition action figure beginning today at the SURU store in Los Angeles and online at http://www.suru-la.com through October 3rd. TRANSFORMERS fans can keep up with all of the latest brand news including the 30th Anniversary on the official TRANSFORMERS Facebook page at http://www.Facebook.com/Transformers.

This thing is a GPS catastrophe in waiting.
It's made of the brownish colored plastic that they've been using for gold lately. It's not the same plastic as the infamous gold plastic that destroys older Transformers.

Cassette completist though I am, there's just soooooo much I haven't saved up for, including 3rd party cassettes that make these 4 seem pointless, and buying MP Soundblaster for the new Ratbat would be way more worthwhile...
And then, it just dawned on me that the brown Ratbat in this set IS a representation of something in official media.
SG Ratbat, when not in his Batbot costume.
Dammit, I am going to have to get this someday. sigh.
Well, maybe the price will bottom out from lack of interest.

That's goo to know. My SW X-Over Chewbaka is now an amputee because of GPS. So, that brown plastic will not crumble over time? It's sad to say, but we'll have to wait a few years to find out. Let's hope for those who pay up to 200$ for this special Soundwave will not be screwed over time.

I think it's usually sparkles in the plastic that create the fracture points. The earliest GPS toy I own is Captain Nemo, a green battleship from the Convertors line in 1985. My most tragic GPS loss to date has been Transmetal Megatron with pinkish chrome.-Kanrabat- wrote:Seibertron wrote:-Kanrabat- wrote:Jesus.

I see some slightly unnerving swirls in this Soundwave, but nothing shiny besides the chrome, so he's probably safe.

I wonder how much of a market this has. Doesn't seem like there's much support from the TF fan side of things; dunno how many non-TF LP fans would want a (several decade old) toy...

A sticker sheet to give the figure some accents would help. But I haven't heard anything about that being included.
As for the market, Joe Hahn reiterates in the Youtube interview that "about 2000" were made. I think between both large fan bases worldwide, it'll get sold out in time. It's just that the haters are the most vocal. The non-TF fans may want it because they love the band or the celebrities and rock stars posing with it at the release party.

Completionists WILL buy this, no questions asked, despite legitimate criticisms and dislike of the toy. Maybe a few legitimate fans (of LP or this design) who love this "gold" "masterpiece" (and butterscotch cookies for them! ).
The completionists, the honest appreciators, and... the SCALPERS. Well, the limited nature of this toy pretty well guarantees that the poachers will prevent future price drops by feverishly snatching these at "list price savings" and eBaying them for what? Triple?
I guess I want to know how Hasbro can sell something that clearly exploits fools who have no interest in this figure. But as Obi Wan said, "Who's the more foolish? The fool or the fools who follow him?"

Yes exactly. I need a Bieber Blaster! Also, +1 on your buzzard comment.
Bumblevivisector wrote:I think it's usually sparkles in the plastic that create the fracture points.
This can't be right. A lot of recent toys have "sparkles." Metroplex, for example. I don't think it's specifically that. According to a Hasbro rep, with the gold plastic, it was literally the "gold flecks" (whatever that is ).
Clear plastic is brittle as heck, too.
I'm disappointed Soundwave isn't completely metal gold (like his buttons), but then I guess the choice is GPS or flaking. Anyway, even if GPS is not a real factor, this is hardly "gold" - it'd be more accurate to call it "fool's gold", as many a fool will pay out the nose for this one!

It's true I would have liked him to be all "gold chrome" like his buttons are, but it probably wouldn't have been feasible from a materials standpoint. I bet the chrome coating is very susceptible to flaking or other damage. The weird brownish plastic is not ideal, and the 2 buzzards being identical as far as I can tell is odd. They should have swapped one of them out for Rumble or Frenzy.
I agree with many of the points brought up by TF fans but at the same time find it cute that some people can't differentiate between "what I think" and "what is true in absolute terms." People who don't like the figure, calling people who buy it dumb or gullible? Sounds like a very 3rd-grade viewpoint to me.
Preference and absolutes are 2 different things. You can like a flavor of ice cream that i think is disgusting, but I'm not going to think you're dumb or wrong for liking it. I am capable of realizing my preference doesn't dictate the universe.
The packaging is very cool as well, it should be interesting trying to keep it in perfect shape when I move in a few months. Cardstock is not known for being very durable.

Couldn't agree more on these points. Feels like a waste to have, essentially, two of the same toy in a box. Could have done black plastic on part of one and inverted it on the other, something, anything, to make them look different!
And the box is a thing of beauty. I'll most likely put everything back in the package and display the set that way.
Here's hoping that gold plastic holds up through time as well!
