It has come to our attention from several Seibertron.com members that MP-05 may have a rust problem.

It appears that on some MP-05's, the diecast in the feet is wearing and becoming rusty, even in normal dry conditions.

Some members have also posted some suggestions on how to combat this "Cosmic Rust" and save Megatron from degrading ankels on down.

Some of the ways to save your Megatron are:
WD-40 for protection
Vinegar for rust removal
Clearcoat for protection

So make sure to check your MP-05 and let us know exactly how widespread a problem this is!

Uh-oh. Mine has some pitting / spotting too. I never really looked at the feet in the past few months. Crap.

What really worries me is that his spine is also metal and really rather narrow.

*Stupid question time*

These are from china, and could have been shipped (on a boat).
Could "Sea air" accelerate rusting from the salt in the air?
I have bought a few things from California and the sea air seems to have an effect... Any thoughts?

Octane I feel your pain. Broke two small brittle plastic tabs by transforming him a couple of times. Broke it in less of a week. Mp 6 Megatron is cheaply done. You can't transform him much. Only display him for a little while but not the whole day or it will get cosmic rust later. I wish the Chinese bootleggers made some replacement parts for him.
But seriously this collector's toy is a bad investment. It's overpriced and it's junk. Just had to say it. I've been frustrated since I've bought it on early April. Several months ago.

Well since it's late and I am bored and the fact there are only 2 pages thus far, I read through all the ideas... and yeah WD-40 is your best rust remover... the clear coat is a real critical choice, the best clear coat to buy in the Hobby world or any market for that matter is the Tamiya Flat clear coat..

Let me give you an example of how powerful this stuff is.....

Once apon a time there were only soft vinyl static Guyver model kits, and not the fine quality toys we have today, a young amatuer hobbyist with a little professional help succeeded in painting a Guyver 1 limited figure that was authentically MAX Factory....the Model came out wonderfully.. all that was left was to let it dry overnight and clean and paint a clear coat over the painted work of art..

The next day to the hobbyists horror the model was still sticky to the touch.. 3 days past and no change, to his dismay the amatuer hobbyist called the professional who preceded to explain that TESTORS ENAMEL paints are in no way suitable for Vinyl!!!! Acrylics is what is used for that
type of material..with a whole in his heart he asked if there was anything that he could do..???

The Professional replied, Yes!! let me tell you of a Product called Tamiya Clear coat....this should fix the problem, he said... and with heavy coats of clear coat and a days worth of drying..the model was finally "almost" entirely sticky free..!!!

I asked the Professional what would have happened over time had I left it without the clear coat?? he said he was amazed that it hadn't melted or degraded in some way.. that was 7 years ago, I still have that model, and I think that the only reason it is still in perfect condition is because it's held together completely by Tamiya Clear Coat...Now I freaking Swear by that stuff!!!

In fact I think I am gonna stop by the parents house, open my boxed Megatron and paint some clear coat on the feet just in case...I don't want it to rust down the road...might as well save me some WD-40 work..

ACK! Mine is doing the exact same thing. I just treated his metal parts with some WD-40. It seemed to clean up easy enough. I just transformed the legs on the one I keep in gun mode that I haven't handled since I removed it from the package ... same exact damn thing. That's most frustrating! Definitely something to keep our optics on.

I haven't noticed anything on mine yet, but should I soak the parts in vinegar/wd 40 or just wipe them down?

Also, I thought the parts were made out of zinc. The MP-1 manual states that's what Prime's made of.

The ultimate G1 homage- the figure rusts in a fashion identical to the original.

Zinc readily oxidizes- uncoated zinc would be a poor choice for die-cast metal, despite its low melting point.

:-(

Also, soak the parts or just wipe them down?

I do have some vinegar, but it's all diluted for use in food. Is that good enough to use or do I need to get something stronger or just get the wd 40?

I'm trying to understand why they don't just use aluminum. Yeah you'd probably be better off machining the pieces instead of trying to cast them but still, it would not be "rusting" as badly as these are. Not to mention that you could get a chunk of aluminum the size of his foot for like 10 cents.

I was serious about going to a gun store for rust removal. Or go online and...

Get this:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/hoppe-quick ... -1215.html

Or this:

http://www.birchwoodcasey.com/sport/blu ... prodcat=55

And make sure to get this:

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/a_cleaning_cloth.asp

Your own fingerprints and body oil causes oxidation. This will help prevent rusting after handling.

Sort of a pain in the ass for a toy ain't it? Why they couldn't take 3 second to apply some type of paint is beyond me. Far as I'm concerned Takara screws up just as much as Hasbro anymore.

Easy tiger, no need to jump on everyone. This isnt an isolated thing, many posters have reported the cosmic rust.

Hey ya guys, just checked mine aswell and it is infected (thanks for the heads up). In addition, the metal parts forming the spine of mine Megatron appear to show rusted spots aswell, so I can only say everybody check your favorite mech (cause it would be a shame if he has to be reformatted in Galvatron in such short notice right)

edit: Just removed the rust using an anti rusting agent so to say and luckely the rust was shallow and subsequently I coated it with WD40 that should do the trick

I was thinking about the weird rust problem again today. I keep mine in gun mode, so there was no rust. But anyway, It struck me that these are probably shipped by boat, and sea air does horrible horrible things to metals.

Also, I spoke to my uncle, a watch repairer. He says that you can remove the rust with vinegar by just rubbing it onto the rusted part. But after the rust is removed, dry and wipe away any vinegar because vinegar is acidic.

And then YOU MUST CLEARCOAT THE METAL.

Like one of the guys said, Tamiya brand is excellent, but auto clear coat should work just fine. Let the part dry overnight.

He also said if we want to avoid rusting, dust more often. That might be why some of you guys are getting rust (he is in robot form, so his feet are exposed) and I dont have any (he is in gun mode)

I don't think the sea is the problem. China uses a kind of nerve gas to treat the wooden pallets where most stuff is stacked on.

This gas penetrates plastics easily and thus could cause that affect as well.

The quality of him is seriously underdone, especially when compared to prime. But prime aside, megs is definrtly lack luster in may places when there really doesn't sem any need fir it.
no rust on mine yet, but loose jointing on the cannon arm and the fact that the device meant to hold the lower and upper body together never really survives the figure being so much as picked up is really unfirgivable. If he's meant to just stand there, why not just make a statue, eh?

Just checked my Megs, and while it's not full blown rust there is some tiny little vains on discolouration - so the process of rust is starting.

I'll put him on the shelf next to Perceptor.. that should solve the problem :-?

Nah, I'll just nick a can of CRC from work :D

Fingernail polish remover might be a little too abraisive... Vinegar is a prefered Method... the WD-40 works, the only issue is that you may want to use it, or any other cleaner for that matter, sparingly so as to not discolor the metal any...

Also Apply the WD-40 to a RAG first!!! Then wipe gently

Tamiya clear coat is the best, but I never thought about using automotive clearcoats on him...that is kind of a harsh substance and I don't want anykind of breakage or metal problems down the road..

Most of Citadel Miniatures, like WarHammer, and LOTR, are painted by my resident friend and "Professional" Rob.... He clear coats all of them with a fine thin layer after he paints them, and trust me, he knows what he's doing...

Just be careful what you use to clean it with, and not to use too much..you don't want a discolored foot for any reason..

Heck, I say just Clear coat all the Masterpieces!!!

Optimus should be fine for the most part, but I would apply clear coat just in case to make sure he's in great shape for the years to come, and also to keep from getting paint chipping, if your scared to do it, have a local comic shop warhammer guy do it, they excell at that sort of thing..My friend Rob said he'd tape the windows up and Airbrush a clear coat evenly over my Prime for free!!!

I think he ment clear nail polish as a "protective" the polish being the coating itself..

It'd say *NO!*

fek.. this stuff is bad for your nails.. it will be worse for chrome..

wow, to think that so many people are suffering with the same thing :-( thanks for all the advice guys.

would anyone be kind enough to explain how to remove the feet from the body because all i see are small pins, whats the best way to remove them? I don't have any experience with this type of thing.

also does rust spread to other diecast models? (just a little worried about my 20th op and G1 figs) need to go get some of that clearcoat stuff too.

jeez this is not the type of hassle i need while moving house, its stressful enough as it is...

When this material fault in the toy starts to affect yours as well and you go searching for this thread or looking for answers as to how to deal with the problem,..

Please, don't hesitate to ask someone else first.

Because I for one, won't give a damn.

Of course. Moister is what mixes with air to cause the oxidization of metals. Though I didnt think chromed metals could rust, unless, the chrome has cracked or peeled away, revealing the gooey center.....mmmmm.....candy.......

Just because something is chromed doesn't mean the metal undernieth can't rust and beither bleed through or cause the coating to flake. I've seen plenty of bike and bumper parts go this way!

Got mine 4 months ago, without the orange cap. =)

That Megs musta travelled.... from China to CA and from there
to Finland!

No sign of actual rust on the feet but they had lost their
sheen a little...Something that seemed only finger filth and
wiped off easily!

However Meg's spine notches have yellow brass like shine...
and I don't remember if they ought to be there!
Kinda neat but if that is a sign of trouble...then Ack!

The underside of the metal dealies of his chest seems slightly
brownish... the microsocpic holes in the metal is where
it starts, I suppose!

I'll wipe em with vinegar soon enough and add some gun oil
to all metal surfaces!
Then we can just wait and pray!

Of course the metal parts could be re-chromed with big bucks
or by home means...if ya have the knowhow.
