Keeping boxes?

Is it worth keeping the boxes of modern figures? I know they lose their value the second you open them, but toys are meant to be played with in my humble opinion.

I think keeping the ones with the plastic inserts makes sense, but many boxes have those tie down straps that you have to cut, so it would be really hard to repackage the figures in those... I especially don't like the current open air ones but that's another topic...

Thanks! :D

I think it depends on your style of collecting. Do you think your collection looks better displayed with boxes?

I used to keep some boxes, but since Legacy started, I've been breaking them down and recycling them. I do keep my SS86 boxes, they are uniform and usually have better art.

Ironically I have kept all the Titan and Combiner Boxes which are pretty big and take up the most space. All smaller bots I don't keep the packaging. Until now it has stored all away in closet space or under a bed. But very soon I'll be out of space packaging.

This type of question has been asked many times over the years and the answer is simple.

It's your personal preference.

What are your motivations for buying a Transformer? Is it for your collection/personal enjoyment or for an investment?

Keep a toy MISB/MOSC and it will most likely appreciate in value, but you're looking at 20+ years and depending on the market (and condition of the figure at the time) could pay off, or it could have been a waste of time.

Buying it for enjoyment/collection, well then you don't really need the packaging, unless you want to flatten it and display the artwork (which let's face it, has been pretty good in recent years).

So it all comes down to what YOU want when you're standing in that toy aisle holding the figure in your hand.

Thanks for the advice!

Any tips on separating the cardboard backs of the packaging of figures that came with plastic fronts (dunno what the packaging type is called, but the siege micromasters came in them). I'd like to avoid tearing the cardboard as much as possible. I guess I could just cut the plastic as close to flush as possible with a hobby knife?

It's called a "bubble" and this is what most people do to preserve the "card back".

Honestly, I swing either way. Its very freeing to not feel pressured to keep boxes, but I went to college partly for package design and really appreciate a nice box sometimes  So if one really strikes my fancy I keep it for a bit, or use the larger boxes to hold accessories or pack up other stuff

If you arent an MISB collector, then keeping the boxes doesn't make much sense, unless it's a special box set (like the recent Haslab Starsabre). There's not much value to the boxes of modern figures. So feel safe in throwing the boxes away.
