We owe it all to Asimov.

He's the one who coined the term robot; and if it wasn't for him, we may not have ever had Gobots and Transformers.

Nope.

Asimov came up with the term "robotics".

Then I guess we owe it all to Josef Carpef.

Mind you, he didn't create actual robots, he merely made the word to use for them. That said, there are words that have the roughly same meaning, "automaton" being one of them.

"Metamorphers, camouflaged automatons"

btw why is this in Toys?

He's still exploring the forums.

Because we get the toys themselves.

This belongs in "General Discussion".

Oh and it might be better if you asked people their their thoughts on the legacy of Asimov - than just make a general statement that could have been made in any reply in a multitude of topics and didn't really need it's own thread.

Besides Transformers bare almost ZERO similarity with Asimovian Robots other than an inorganic body and a degree of sentience.

That said though the Asimov Robots committed Genocide against aliens on a level that would make even Megatron gag. In just a few hundred/thousand years they scourged the entire galaxy of most alien life and casually terraformed the planets into cosy worlds for humans to use when they found them.

Imagine a race of quasi-sentient tools who arrive from space and start demolishing your planet so they can rebuild it they won't negotiate they won't talk to you - they don't care about you as you are outside their "3 laws" and so they don't even really see you - whole species both underdeveloped biospheres and whole civilisations were wiped out by billions of self-replicating drones with no supervision. to make the galaxy a safe place for humans.

That is a lot more horrific than Megatron's minor villainy.

Robot was coined by Karel Čapek in the amazin play RUR. This play came out the year Azimov was born so way before he was a writer.

Check out the wiki entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.U.R.

Also, moving this to general discussion.

I don't really have anything to add, I just quoted this because it's the best thing I have read so far today.

And I like a lot of Asimov's work.

And Transformers can't/shouldn't be considered "robots."

Only because "WE" understand this.

Do you think the human population at large
would take the time and consideration we have?

Humans are stupid, frightened monkeys
shivering around a fire
to afraid and self obsessed
to even try to consider what is making noises in the dark.

I consider them robots even though they're nothing but toys. They look robotic, and that's good enough for me.
