 My thoughts exactly!

Also: does anyone really collect these "Best Of..." books? Speaking for myself, I've already got all of those stories collected in TPB form, but where they're presented in order of natural story progression, with the issues before & after included also.

A collection like this plucks an almost arbitrary selection of stories, excised from different continuities. For those of us who collect the comic series, we've already got the stories presented in better, more logical formats.

I'm assuming collections of this sort are designed to hook new readers, but for those new to Transformers or the comics, I'd have thought the random selection of stories in this & other collections like it would do little but confuse readers unfamiliar with the material, taken out of context as they are.

Am I wrong, or missing something obvious?

If I was a new reader, "Best of..." would be the last thing I'd ever pick up. If I were a casual reader, I'd see it, think "cool", and move on without a second thought. As a serious fan, this is just redundant, for all the reasons you mention.
