Alright Seibertronians I will explain how I got into this series in a moment but here is a hint: I like it more than Netflix WFC.

That's not surprizing. ;)

Also for many, Sailor Moon was their gateway to Anime.
It was for me in a way, but I was into anime without knowing what anime ever was way back in the late 1970's when watching Goldorak on TV when I was 3 or 4 years old.

Okay here we go, weeks later

Yeah, let me take you to a time from when I was not a fan. It was back in 2018 when a former friend on Twitter sent me an image of Usagi/Serena holding her bunny plush with an irritated look. And that was her when I didn't know her name. I was like "lol she's pretty funny-looking" and didn't think much about it. But a year later when I went on vacation to Mexico, me and my family went to a long flea market where a vendor was selling fake Lego minifigures. I was close to getting a big fig Venom, a PS4 Spidey (because they never had official versions), and a Sailor Moon figure just because she intrigued me.

During 2020 when the pandemic was going on I was painting my bedroom and listened to some vaporwave music to get some peace of mind. I listened to the remixed tracks, Simpsonwave, mallsoft, and stumbled upon a video that has Amy in it! This gif made me go "hmmm, this anime character interests me. She's not like the modern era of characters that go through the usual tropes. I'd like to learn more about her one day".

Then I saw a similar video but with Mina. Then I realized before then that I saw the redraw challenge around that time. And seeing her in that pic made me think "WHO ARE YOU, MYSTICAL CHARACTERS?"

Sadly, my interest in them faded when the room-painting was over. And I tried to squeeze the new stuff that's left from the other interests I had as much as I can when things started to get downhill later in the year.

And around the 4th quarter of 2020 I saw some Ghost Stories videos that I wanted to check out just because I was interested to learn about how infamous they are, and one of them lead me to a specific video with a thumbnail that will never leave my memory. After seeing some random videos from Ghost Stories, I found a video that was titled "The Meatball Head Won't Shut Up" and it was a clip from SuperS.

It was that scene that made me initially dislike Linda's voice, that scene that made me laugh so hard and feel a little cringed at it, that scene that began to solidify my interest in the franchise from watching more of these clips. And I eventually subbed to the Sailor Moon Says channel but not long enough to enjoy it on my feed because of the Toei copyright takedown of June 2021.

Interesting tale. Have you gotten around to watching the anime (either one) or reading the manga (any translation)? I don't expect you to give the live action series a watch as it can be, shall we say, an acquired taste (it's a Tokusatsu, like Power Rangers).

I've already started S a few weeks ago. Next episode appears to be part 2 of the birthday episode. As for the manga, with how it's basically a similar but different story to the anime (even though it came before the anime aired), I probably won't read it right away the same way I did with the Marvel Comics of G1 after finishing the Sunbow cartoon. I don't plan to watch Crystal but I saw the Eternal movies and felt I should have waited until I better understood the series. And the live-action series isn't my cup of tea because it feels less robust compared to Power Rangers/Super Sentai/Kamen Rider but I know a friend who loves PGSM.

You watching it subbed (which subs) or dubbed (which dub)?

That's what I did, yeah. Watched all of the anime and then read the manga. Sailor V as well.

Quantum Surge wrote:I don't plan to watch Crystal but I saw the Eternal movies and felt I should have waited until I better understood the series.
Yeah, you probably shouldn't have done that. Crystal/Eternal is basically a mostly faithful adaptation of the manga with a small number of changes (some minor and some major).

Quantum Surge wrote:And the live-action series isn't my cup of tea because it feels less robust compared to Power Rangers/Super Sentai/Kamen Rider but I know a friend who loves PGSM.
It starts off feeling like a cheesy Power Rangers/Super Sentai series in its early episodes, but then later becomes much more like a J-Drama with some Toku fight scenes as its storyline gets substantially more dramatic and complex.

First question, dubbed because it was to honor the Sailor Moon Says channel that was terminated. Classic dub is actually pretty good but then again I'm not someone who is a diehard anime purist. I do watch the Japanese episodes for the skipped ones and plan to for Stars since I stream them for some Discord friends.

I'm interested in reading Sailor V since I know we'll never get the OVA.

I heard Crystal is very faithful to the manga, though the older episodes were quite rough on the eyes for the animation.

I do like the more drama elements of PGSM from what a friend told me, and she surprised me with the fact that Minako died in that version. Then again, she never liked Venus back then, and it amused me seeing how she made a younger fan in our group chat go nuts over that moment lol

It's mostly faithful. Though, there were some major changes made during the first season that really upset a lot of people. The second season was more faithful that the first, but still had some minor alterations made that folks were mostly okay with. Third season's pretty faithful, as are the two Eternal movies.

As for the animation, season one was pretty rough in places, but Toei fixed those rough spots for the Blu-Ray release. And the animation changed completely for the third season onward, which most felt was for the better.

Yeah. PGSM gets really mature (in the right way) the further along it goes. It's very character driven and features a ton of really great character dynamics between all of its heroes and villains. Many of its characters are very layered and three-dimensional, with some even questioning and even exploring their place in the conflict between good vs. evil.

As for Minako, yeah, she was heavily reimagined for that series, being the polar opposite of her sillier anime/manga counterparts as a very serious character more akin to the likes of Uranus and Neptune instead.

Good luck. It's the worst season with the most filler and the least amount of plot.

As Sabrblade said, good luck. It really is the weakest of the classic series.

I don't normally watch mojo but I am aware of the edits. Some are fine as they are, others are a little weird, and a few I don't get. But it doesn't bother me that much since I'm not someone who is obsessed with neither all of anime nor being faithful.

I got tired of hyakko rouran go rangers from the 6os in the 90s. So I changed the channel and watched sailor moon. I got made fun of for mentioning Sailor Mars. Some guys said, see, he knows the names of all the characters and acts like he wants to talk about it. I know Stan Bush plays She's got the power from Sailor moon, hits from the hit tv show. Sailor Mars looks just like Kagome Higurashi with longer hair. Kagome is from Inuyasha/Final Act/Yashahime.I was 13 when I saw sailor moon. I should have had cn to watch Gundam Wing instead. Back in the 90s.

1-2 month late update but I finished the original anime. Good stuff, it's in my top 3, outranking Transformers Cybertron and behind King of the Hill.

Spoilers

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars is the real ending that wasn't shown on tv in the usa. The Sailor Stars keep transforming from girls to guys and guys to girls. Sailor Galaxia is meaner than Queen Beryl.

So, question. The Power Rangers lightning Collection has released some of the more famous MOTD in toy form. If it were up to you, which MOTD from the original 1992 Sailor Moon anime would you like in toy form?

Sailor Mars. Then I would buy Irwin Toy's Sailor Mars. Irwin made Rei Hino's toy better.

Funny. I don't remember Sailor Mars ever being a Monster Of The Day.

For me, Oniwabandana or Thetis.
