Unhealthy Obsessions?

So this comes up a lot in the world, when people look at you funny for your hobbies and interests...when they see adults go gaga over toys and they're thinking you're mental or something. What is your opinion? I need to talk about this. I know people in my family think Im immature or something but I just see my obsessions and hobbies, eyc, as a way of expressing myself and enjoying imagination, which I can't live without.

I think the key is balance. Its not the fact that I like comics, movies and toys. It's the fact that I do the things I need to do in life to keep myself healthy and responsible. If you do what you need to do, like school and work you are probably on the right track.

I don't feel the need to defend myself against others who may judge me for liking what I like. It's my time and money and I'll spend it how I want. If they don't like it, the heck with them. I have met a lot of good friends through Transformers who are also grown and they motivate me to move forwards in life and do what I love.

I think it's becoming more and more acceptable for adults to like DC and Marvel movies so Transformers isn't too much of a stretch. (Wish we had better flicks though) If anyone judges you over liking a toy then they probably aren't someone I'd wanna hang out with personally. I shouldn't feel like I have to pretend I don't like things around someone to be cool. It's just not genuine or healthy.

That being said if someone delves deeply into a hobby as an escape it's not the hobby's fault. It's more likely that that person needs help and they are using something they like and have control over to cope.

Thank you a lot for your lovely reply, WreckerJack. Love the name btw. Im a 30 year old woman who is engaged. I don't have kids, but I have cats. Anyway, I sm used to feeling a bit weird around most of my family because they've heavily critized my interests when I was younger and Im sure they still do, which is why I rarely get replies from most of them when I post about my interests. However, luckily I have a very supportive boyfriend and his side of the family and one of my cousins are cool with it and share a lot of similar interests. It's just that starting to collect toys again was something me and my man fought about at first, basically saying it would be a waste of money because I won't do much with them but look at them. I won the battle though, considering he was fine with our ever growing collection of video games and video game memorabilia, like the ocarina he has only touched a few times. So ha! I get to collect Transformers! He even likes them, though not as much as I do, but I'm the same way with the Zelda franchise. I enjoy it but it's not my favorite thing. I am glad though that we're both nerds. We met online via Roleplaying on a Naruto RPG forum. It's the best relationship ever to have someone who is nerdy with you. :)
But yah....most of my anxiety comes from my brother and his wife (my parents died a long time ago) who have always tried controling my life in the past, and at one point made me give up on art and fanfics. I stopped talking to him for an entire year...maybe more, because I was so mad at him for the past (it had to do with abuse and other personal things), but I've recently got back on Facebook and now I call him every now and then. Im trying to put the past behind me and come out of my shell, so to speak. One thing for sure is since I finished my education and got a job and haven't been living with him, I have become much more confident and happier. I refuse to let him or anyone control my life.

You are welcome and I am glad. I am a 28 year old guy who has a girlfriend I met through Transformers. In my early college years my family would raise eyebrows at things I like but now that I am more well adjusted they accept it. I think they have come to realize that it isn't bad for me.

I'd like to think that liking toys and games has encouraged me to use my brain and learn some skills. For example I got a TFA Megatron used that had some rust in his battery compartment. I learned how to use baking soda and vinegar to remove it. I later transferred what I had learned to restore a knife in the kitchen and save some money. Again, it's what you get out of a hobby that counts. (Even if it just makes your day better) ;)^

That's so awesome, Jack. I believe the same thing about my hobbies. For example, anime and roleplaying and making stories, etc based off of the animes and shows I like helped me in a lot of different ways. As a teenager it gave me a sense of security and also an adventurous place I could escape from the problems in my reality. Also if it wasn't for liking my hobbies I would have never met my true love (we've been together for 5 years now), and RPing helped me grow my vocabulary and improve my grammar and such. I also had a cool little fix-it project myself, though it was cleaning out my NES. I learned how to disessemble my NES console, remove, clean and replace the 72 pin connector. I think we could be good friends.

That is amazing. Must have been cool to see the innards of you NES. I'm always amazed when people can do complicated computer projects. I enjoy woodworking and welding a lot. I can also sew (Too many pairs of ripped pants as a kid encouraged Grandma to teach me haha.)

If you click my sig you will find I do my own photocomics or skits with my figures. I wouldn't mind role playing now and then. A friend of mine said that I do a decent Wheeljack impression in our text chats.

I had a feeling we would get along.

Very cool. Yah...unfortunately that NES died a few years ago. I bought some cheap games for it from a Goodwill store ( R.C Pro Am, Donkey Kong Classic, and Top Gun) thinking I found a great deal. I cleaned all the games with alcohol and q tips, but when I tried out Donkey Kong it didn't work and the next thing you know...the screen only displayed the color orange. I tried cleaning the contacts again and the 72 pin...nothing. I killed my baby. It was a disaster.

Recently, only a few weeks ago I bought another NES from my favorite used media store. I was super excited. Also picked up a copy of Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) and got home and turned it on....flashing power light, no picture. So...opened this NES and saw this one went through Hell. There was mold on the shielding and sticky coffee or soda. Soda can kill electronics. For the sake of hope I still took it apart1and cleaned the 72 pin connector. The motherboard was discolored and sticky. I cleaned it best I could without trying to destroy it. Then after that, the controller ports didn't work. We cleaned that...B button was the only one that worked. The system at that point needed completely new parts. I returned it the next day and told them it was broken. I was depressed. I'm going to try getting a top loader NES next, hopefully modded for AV or HDMI output because all it usually has is RF.

Besides RPing, gaming, and collecting games, figures, and plushies, I also like reading, drawing, and painting even though I don't do much art nowadays (but I have project ideas). I'm thinking of modding the colors on my Optimus Prime TF5 premier leader class to make it more movie accurate.

I intend to join the RP they have here at some point. Until then if you want sometime, hit me up for casual RP. :)

All good things come to an end. But hey, you tried to fix it so that counts for something. You will have to start a collection thread at some point to show off all your figures and plush. I read and hike. I am also into birdwatching.

Sounds good to me, if you want to plot we can always take that to the RP section or to PMs so we don't go too far off topic.

I mean...he even takes what I say and uses it for his sig! Who does something like that? it's just not right, or sane! so I'd definitely say that he's got an unhealthy obsession.....with ME!!!!
(I just hope Ryan is watching all of this! & has strong words with him)

just because he's broken up with his girlfriend, he has to take it out on others

(if you wanna know who he is? HE knows who HE is)

so leave me the eff alone Darryl! and go bother someone else for a change!

right! that's the last I'm gonna say on the matter
