They pulled in a number of unannounced guest stars to play the nostalgia card. For a Chibnall story it wasn't half bad.

Thought they would have held back on the nostalgia with the anniversary story on the horizon.

Power of the Doctor

There were parts of this that really annoyed me. Especially the reveal that is now all over every media. But also parts I liked. In all fairness, it was probably as good a send off to the 13th Doctor as Chibnall could manage really.

Now let us never allow him near Doctor Who ever again!

Spoilers below!

A few years back I had an idea where the Doctor and Master should be fused for a regeneration, and the Doctor have to struggle with identity issues and darker impulses. Between that and 13 's coat also being almost exactly the coat I would have designed for a Doctor if I had been in charge of costuming, I started to wonder if Chibnall is my evil future self. Had a bit of an identity crisis while watching this.

I did like the idea of Rasputin being the Master. Hypnotic powers and being hard to kill? Sounds like the Master, all right. Makes you wonder how no one thought of that before.

The Doctor kicking Yaz out just because was annoying. As contrived as the reasons for some companion exists were, at least they were reasons.

That being said, this was better than most of Chibnall's run, and if the quality had been up to this, I would have enjoyed the whole era a lot more

Personally, I thought the whole Rasputin bit was there purely to set up the Boney M song. I rolled my eyes quite hard at that point.

I thought it interesting that the whole Doctor/Yaz "shipping" thing was thrown out the window here. The conversation with the ice cream was pretty decisive in that regard. Much like the Timeless Child stuff, that wasn't addressed at all in this. I think both of these ideas Chibnall either put there, strictly for shock value. Alternatively, he had no idea what to do with them.

Finally caught up on the Doctor. I phased out during the Flux stuff and sort of forgot the series existed for a while.

I gotta say I enjoyed Flux a lot more in a bingable format, but that's not saying much. So did the Flux actually destroy much of the Universe and they didn't reverse that? Seems a bit odd to destroy the Cybermen, Daleks and Sontarans and then bring 2 out of the 3 back without addressing that in the next season. But that's Doctor Who for ya.

Eve of the Daleks was all right, the whole setup seemed a bit contrived and Aisling Bea took me out of it for some reason. Maybe it hit too close to home because I have a celeb crush on her much like the guy did.

Legend of the Sea Devils was campy and there were some very weird filming cuts that seemed, I don't know, rough to me. Maybe a result of COVID filming? I liked the premise but it felt flat.

Power of the Doctor was as much fun as I had watching a Chibnall Doctor Who. The Master was great (and I did enjoy the Rasputin song, sorry AllNewSuperRobot) primarily for the reaction shot between the Cybermen and the Daleks. However I didn't care for the unrequited attraction between Yaz and The Doctor. It didn't add anything and just took up screentime. Overall, I was happier with the final 3 minutes than I was with most of Chibnall's run.

Overall, I liked Whittiker's Doctor, and very disappointed that the writers and showrunners just weren't up to the task. Excited for RTD to be back at the helm!

That's what I thought. Giving the anniversary year a real retro vibe. Hopefully that will be reflected in the Tardis. So the next one doesn't look like a cave...

Today the BBC and Disney Branded Television - two giants of entertainment - have come together to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise for UK audiences and the rest of the world.

Under a shared creative vision, they will deliver this quintessentially British show to future generations on an unprecedented scale with Disney+ as the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside the UK and Ireland. The announcement - which was made this morning by the next Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan - begins a new collaboration between BBC and Disney Branded Television. A new Doctor Who logo was also unveiled for the new era.

Both partners have aligned under returning showrunner Russell T Davies' bold vision, who takes control of the TARDIS in 2023. He was responsible for Doctor Who's revival in 2005 and is credited with propelling the show into one of TV's biggest hits.

The new episodes will premiere on the BBC and Disney+ beginning in late 2023 for fans all over the world.

The show will be produced in Wales by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios Production.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Russell T Davies says:

"I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds - with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK."

Charlotte Moore, BBC's Chief Content Officer says:

"We are thrilled to announce this exciting global partnership with Disney who are the perfect partners to bring this very British show to the rest of the world. Russell T Davies' vision for Doctor Who has always been out of this world and we are committed to ensuring that audiences across the globe get the opportunity to enjoy the Doctor's epic adventures with the scale and ambition that they deserve. Joining forces with Disney will elevate the show to even greater heights and reach new audiences so it's an extremely exciting time for fans in the UK and across the world."

Alisa Bowen, President, Disney+ says:

"We're excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world. The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalog of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling."

Ayo Davis, President, Disney Branded Television says:

"Doctor Who has captivated the imaginations of families around the world for the past six decades. We are so excited about this collaboration with the BBC, and the opportunity to bring this iconic franchise - and Russell T Davies' brilliant vision - to life for a huge new global audience. Grab your sonic screwdrivers and prepare to travel through time and space!"

Rebecca Glashow, CEO, Global Distribution, BBC Studios says:

"We're delighted to join forces with a partner who shares our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic shows in British TV history. This is great news for everyone who loves Doctor Who, and for all the new fans we will reach through this powerful partnership."

Jane Tranter & Julie Gardner, Executive Producers and Co-founders, Bad Wolf, says:

"For Doctor Who to have the backing of two of the most innovative and respected media organizations in the world is a testament to the unique drive and vision at the heart of this show. Bad Wolf are beyond delighted to be once again working with the genius that is Russell T Davies and, with the exciting new partnership between the BBC and Disney, we can together reach to even greater heights, producing from Wolf Studios Wales ambitious stories through time and space for audiences across the globe."

Everything I'd read indicated it was BBC America only that was losing the rights, but nope, it's every where.

After 50+ years, Doctor Who will no longer be shown on ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) as free-to-air, I've only every known DW on ABC so I'm feeling a little sad about it because it's the end of an era, something I've known all my life.

I've seen a lot of comments from people saying they'll no longer be watching DW because they won't/can't afford to pay a subscription, and I fully understand that. I've had D+ since it launched in Australia and it's always given me a mix of Marvel and Star Wars shows each week, so adding DW to the mix is no big deal for me, but I do sympathise with a lot of the older fans who won't be signing up to D+.

I heard some music, from some girl, from Dr. Who. The girl is like MM from Playboy. The girl looks and sings like MM. I prefer Bettie Page, just like Dave Mustaine.

As much as I'm hoping for Donna to get her memories back and reunite with the Doctor, if her whole plot is her family's hijinks to keep her from seeing the Doctor, I'd be okay with that.

I'm very curious by Beep The Meep making his onscreen debut. Potentially opens the door to Frobisher and every other non-humanoid character of Classic Who to make the transition to the screen.

Frobisher is one of my all-time favorite companions. The frustrating thing is the unrealized potential, just like with Kamelion. If his default form is too expensive to puppeteer/animate, as a shapeshifter you can cast literally anyone to play them. Hell, have a revolving door of guest stars to play them. Why has no one thought of that?

Because Nu Who has rigidly stuck to a formula. That persists even into the future, potentially with Ruby Sunday. It's like I always say with Transformers, stop focusing on boring humans.

Ah but we've at least had a couple secondary companions of other species/time periods, like Harkness and Nardole.

Personally I think it's a crime we didn't get a second season of Twelve, Bill, and Nardole. They were the best TARDIS team of the nuWho era.

Bill as Cyberman would have been a very interesting companion to retain. It still bugs me how Moffatt copped out on Bill's fate.

He copped out on every death.
River Song- Saved to the Library
Strax- brought back with literally no explanation
Rory- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Amy and Rory- technically got to live out long lives, they were just separated from the Doctor
Clara- got to adventure indefinitely as basically a time-zombie

And in his very last episode he introduced a plot device that literally had everyone in the universe preserved in Testimony. Makes me wonder if Moffat has a serious pathological fear of the concept of death.

Rory's resurrection yo-yo was ridiculous. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he wouldn't have let Adric die in Earthshock either. Which completely misses the point of the narrative.

Moffatt really fixated far too much on that "everybody lives" line he wrote from The Doctor Dances. I think you might be right on his fear there.

60th Anniversary news!

Lost Doctor Who episodes brought back using cartoons to mark 60th anniversary

Lost Doctor Who episodes are being brought back to life using cartoons and colour.

To mark the sci-fi show’s 60th anniversary this year, two stories from the 1960s are to be drawn and released on Blu-ray and DVD.

They are William Hartnell’s penultimate story The Smugglers, and Patrick Troughton’s third adventure, The Underwater Menace.

Both four-part stories were originally transmitted by the BBC, before film prints were sold overseas, and the original tapes were destroyed.

Episodes two and three of The Underwater Menace have been recovered, but only brief clips from The Smugglers story exist.

An insider said: “Fans have been delighted as the show’s fourth season has been slowly restored through animated episodes.

“Only 10 of the 43 broadcast episodes still exist, so we’re getting to see the missing classics.”

Last year, the BBC ended the release of animated versions after BBC America stopped funding the restoration of early stories. But new funding has been arranged.

BBC bosses plan to colourise certain stories from the Hartnell and Troughton eras (1963-69), for broadcast next year. This is likely to include the very first story, An Unearthly Child.

The animation deal is not connected to the show’s tie-up with Disney+.

The 60th anniversary will be marked on BBC1 with three autumn specials featuring David Tennant, 51, as the 14th Doctor, before Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, 30, takes over.
