So what's the problem? - Discussion thread

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Ultra Magnus in the Unicron trilogy? Do you mean the repaint of overload from energon? I had him, he was nifty considering he only existed to give prime a set of guns.

I always thought prime was a mix of animated and movie verse design wise and I was impressed with the engineers who did the toys, especially on animated, the first time I transformed prowl I was stunned, same with Lockdown. A lot of people put animated down because of visuals

I had no idea he was a repaint (the red of Overload looks awful by the way).

That's the thing, I liked Animated - The Show, for it's visuals. I didn't like the look of the toys though. Prime made a lot of weird design choices I didn't like from the beginning EG Extended eyebrows, no noses etc

Yeah it's definitely a better colour scheme then overload and I think it looks better combined than overload. There was another couple of reprints as well, all better than the original.

I'd say the best unique character in The Unicron Trilogy is Tidal Wave. It's just a shame the toy is a Parts-Former.

I always felt we only got Overload because the mold was leaked early to the point Hasbro was incredibly pissed off about it. It quickly made news and they had no control of it, everyone knew it was Ultra Magnus.

After that, he became Overload and I feel Hasbro did it to spite the fans and "punish" us for being so supportive of the leak.

Personally I hate leaks and spoilers, things like that. They should be actively discouraged. Although it is a common practice these days that doesn't bother people as it should/once did. Can you imagine if some scumbag leaked that Prime would die in The Movie. Obviously it's a bad example as Internet access wasn't really a thing in '86... but you get the idea.

I like the character and he was a great level/boss in the game BUT if the toy was one whole piece, it would have been a lot better.

You don't see leaks like we used to around the time of A/E/C, Hasbro are pretty on top of that themselves by sharing more and more information. Plus they shifted factories. That's probably the big reason.

I suppose that added openness is a step in the right direction. But the thrill of the unexpected surprise can't be overstated. I mean if around the time of the next Con of Toy Expo, if HasTak suddenly dropped MP Jazz or MP Galvatron out of thin air, that is a reaction to savour.

I agree with what everyone else sayz. The movie version of G1 Hot Rod becoming a new Prime could have been great but Season 3 which i felt like was mostly like anime filler material just ruined the potential. The Burden Hardest To Bear and Return Of Optimus Prime episodes were good.

And then they did this, created this atrocity of a episode... Dark Awakening, it was wrong on so many levels to revive him as a zombie and kill Optimus Prime again. Im surprized Hasbro got away with no controversy over that episode when it aired.

Weirdest part about that episode, if memory serves, it was aired in the wrong order. I believe it was supposed to be chronologically closer to Return of Optimus Prime, which would have lessened it's impact even further :???:

They got away with it because that generation weren't a bunch of overly sensitive participation award given softies that need to be protected from the harsh reality of the world.

You say that and I'd agree with you but... This came after the OTT reaction to his Original death in The Movie.

Still it's quite a close call compared to the movie death because of his last moment face in the episode. I'm a grown 30 year old man and i still get the chills when i watch it as if i am in my early teens. :(

Prime's death never bothered me. Granted I could recite The Movie, line for line, when I was three (with voices too, apparently). Because his death was his own fault. I'm told at the time I was more bothered by the death of Kranix...

Yep. To me at the time, the most horrific death in the film. It's something you can associate with real life, unlike the rest of the film. Being eaten alive...

To be fair that's on a same level of horrificness as falling into the digestive vats inside unicron, real life comparison would be falling into lava (or to a lesser extent, suffering fatal burns) basically feeling horrendous amounts of pain before death. Prowl and the like got off easy.

To a 3y/o though, being devoured by Sharks/monsters with massive teeth is a bit more real than lava or acid.

Everyone killed on the Shuttle got off easy... Except Ironhide

Hah true, though in the Japanese continuity you get the fun of prime being killed off three times! So maybe he got the short end of the stick?

Nah, Ironhide still got it worse, even though it was only once :P

Maybe if they had just let the first death stick (and not have his replacement turn into a futuristic Winnebago  ) they wouldn't have needed to reuse the idea

Exactly! He had a good death in The Movie. He had that epic final confrontation with his long term rival, which killed them both (technically) you don't get a much better finale than that.
They should have left them both there.

His existence in the fiction now is a joke. Because now they will never kill him for good.

There is so much more to Transformers than a boring, hypocritical Trukk.

I don't think he's boring or hypocritical, and you also have to take into account his popularity especially with the kids. For a lot of adults who at the time back in 86' and saw this movie as kids, watching their hero die as well as others who might have been their favs, was really traumatizing, and very dark for a movie that was geared towards preteens. Now, looking back at G1 as an adult, we see how silly the plot was. We also have to realize Transformers is and always has been about the toys first and foremost, and though we may wish characters weren't pushed to the sidelines and or killed off, it was all based on selling toys....

OP is here to stsy as well as many main characters, while lesser characters are pretty much unknown nowadsys by the kiddos. Sure we have a lot of CHUG and Prime Wars Trilogy figures giving us back some of them in a new light...but there are others who we still haven't gotten toys of, or if we have, not really good ones ( ie Cliffjumper and Shockwave).

However despite all this, I guess we can at least be happy Transformers is still a popular franchise.

That's why Optimus, megs and bumblebee (and a few others) are part of the evergreen line as they are mainstays in the fiction (and helps to keep those trademarks, which is the real reason there will always be an Optimus)

Transformers maybe popular but we must forget that it was the franchise taking risks that saved it from the death which g2 brought with it.
