I need advice on safely storing comics and toys.

Motto: "Individual freedom above all else."
So, it seems in the not-too-distant-future I will be changing places to live. It's still down the road, but I want to prepare for it by starting to pack up my stuff. I don't have an immense collection, but it is a decent size, so I want to get started. I have a mix of MIB and loose figures, and it looks like I will be putting them in a rented storage unit for a while. My concern is that they would become damaged if I didn't pack them in right. So I am asking for any tips you might have to store figures the right way, as I have never had to do this before. Same with my comics. All my comics are in boarded bags and sealed, though I open them when I read them. They're also in standard storage boxes. Is there anything more I should do to prevent possible damage from water and temperature changes, or whatever else might come up? I know I could google some of this stuff, but I would rather read it here first. Any advice is appreciated. ;)^

Hey man, new to the forums. :-)

Definitely use either Roughneck or another storage box that can withstand cold when you do decide to move or store your collection instead of a cardboard storage box. Reason being, cold can take a toll on plastic and other pieces that you might have. Also, the misconception is that “it’s safe upstairs or in the basement in the box” but in actuality things get bumped, smacked around, or an earthquake make occur, so nice to have a flexible storage box like one of the coloured ones from Walmart (there should be labels in the side that indicate if it is cold resistant and stackable.

Hope that helps

Keep them somewhere climate controlled and away from sunlight if at all possible. Climate controlled storage can and usually does cost more, but if it's short term that shouldn't be too much of an issue. This is especially important for comics where humidity can kill! If put somewhere like a basement, don't underestimate the value of wooden pallets. They can be had sometimes for free and that few inches off the ground can be all the difference between something dumb like a broken pipe or leaky water heater or lord knows what from wrecking your stuff vs not.

For the toys, cheap towels are the way I would go for a smaller collection. Bubble wrap for a larger one. If you have time, put them in alt mode first - this will usually protect robot limbs from getting pinched in between things.

Finally, a separate box/boxes for anything that suffers from GPS that you label prominently, that way you don't stack anything on top of it or get too wild in transport of it.

Sound advice! Thanks guys! Fortunately I can get a pallet at work for free so that's covered. I don't think I have any figures with GPS, but I'll double check. So my comics should be fine in the sealed bags and boxes as long as the temp doesn't change a lot?

If my G1 and G2 stuff was safe at my parents' house for 25+ years in just a box, yeah :) Humidity should not be ignored, but anywhere with decent climate control should have that taken care of. Basements/garages might need a separate dehumidifier.
